Eliminating junk mail and other paper waste!

Do you get TONS of Junk mail everyday?  Probably.. just about every week we get the same credit card offers and flyers.  It made me so sick to throw away all that paper that we started a huge collection for all our paper trash that we can recycle every other week.  But in the meantime the pile up drives me crazy!  If it goes outside it gets wet and soggy.. so we just keep it in the kitchen.. not very economical on the space.  I was excited to find this way to STOP junk mail delivery all together.

STOP JUNK MAIL
By Veronica, Age 9, Setauket, New York &
Dana, Age 8, South Setauket, New York

Americans get more than 2 million tons of junk mail a year. That adds up to  a lot of trees.   If you want to help make a difference just send a letter to the Mail Preference Service asking them to remove your name.

Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association.
P.O. Box 282
Carmel, NY  10512

  • Write: "Please remove my name from any junk mail lists."
  • Include all of the different ways your name is spelled when you get junk mail. (Ex. Jane Doe, J. Doe, etc.)
  • You'll need to include a check or money order for $1.

Another way to get your name off of the junk mail lists (without it costing any money) is to do in online at the following address: https://www.dmachoice.org/MPS/mps_consumer_description.php

This will stop your name from being sold to most large mailing list companies.  Your request will last for 3 years. It won't stop the one's that already have your name but it can reduce your junk mail by 75%.  To stop the ones that have your name contact  them directly.

Other ways to cut down on paper waste is to switch to online billing for all of your regular bills.  Credit cards, electric, water, cell phone, cable, phone, and internet.. even our mortgage.. ALL of the bills are paid online through my bank account.  Or if they don't have that billpay option I'll go directly to the account online and make payment.  It's amazing how much less paper we have now.. and I don't have to file things or shred them because they have our account number on them!

Hope you like the tips!  Now enjoy the free or cheap goodies!

Rue La La $20 credit!!

Sign up for Rue La La here and get a $20 store credit that will post to your account in like 2 days!  Rue La La offers great discounts on fashion and goods for the home.  Each boutique will only be on Rue La La for a day or two, so you need to check often to see what new deals are available!  Today there is a large number of expensive high fashion clothes, watches and purses.. all marked down about 50%!  Still a bit pricey for gifts for me, especially with the baby mush Eve keeps rubbing on my clothes right now..  but I will just hold onto my $20 credit and keep an eye out for something even more awesome!!

Monday morning brings the greatest Groupon deal in the world!!!! And ways to reduce electricity consumption in your home!

So we went to a solar panel seminar at Home Depot.. they are trying to sell you on switching to solar and using them to install it.  There are companies out there who will rent your roof space.. basically they put a system on your house, and you pay them for electric usage.  But it doesn't give you free electric, and you don't get any of the money earning credits for having a solar system.    What I really learned from that is my 1000 sq ft. of roof that is southern facing and is optimal for a solar panel setup is only enough to provide HALF of our current electricity usage.. and what we REALLY need to do now is cut down how much we use!  Here are some tips I looked up.  Anyone else have any great electricity reducing tips?  The scary thing for us is that with my background we've already done a bunch of this!!

Turn your refrigerator down. Refrigerators account for about 20% of Household electricity use. Use a thermometer to set your refrigerator temperature as close to 37 degrees and your freezer as close to 3 degrees as possible. Make sure that its energy saver switch is turned on. Also, check the gaskets around your refrigerator/freezer doors to make sure they are clean and sealed tightly.
Set your clothes washer to the warm or cold water setting, not hot. Switching from hot to warm for two loads per week can save nearly 500 pounds of CO2 per year if you have an electric water heater, or 150 pounds for a gas heater.
Make sure your dishwasher is full when you run it and use the energy saving setting, if available, to allow the dishes to air dry. You can also turn off the drying cycle manually. Not using heat in the drying cycle can save 20 percent of your dishwasher's total electricity use.
Turn down your water heater thermostat. Thermostats are often set to 140 degrees F when 120 is usually fine. Each 10 degree reduction saves 600 pounds of CO2 per year for an electric water heater, or 440 pounds for a gas heater. If every household turned its water heater thermostat down 20 degrees, we could prevent more than 45 million tons of annual CO2 emissions - the same amount emitted by the entire nations of Kuwait or Libya.
Select the most energy-efficient models when you replace your old appliances. Look for the Energy Star Label - your assurance that the product saves energy and prevents pollution. Buy the product that is sized to your typical needs - not the biggest one available. Front loading washing machines will usually cut hot water use by 60 to 70% compared to typical machines. Replacing a typical 1973 refrigerator with a new energy-efficient model, saves 1.4 tons of CO2 per year. Investing in a solar water heater can save 4.9 tons of CO2 annually.

Be careful not to overheat or overcool rooms. In the winter, set your thermostat at 68 degrees in daytime, and 55 degrees at night. In the summer, keep it at 78. Lowering your thermostat just two degrees during winter saves 6 percent of heating-related CO2 emissions. That's a reduction of 420 pounds of CO2 per year for a typical home.

Clean or replace air filters as recommended. Energy is lost when air conditioners and hot-air furnaces have to work harder to draw air through dirty filters. Cleaning a dirty air conditioner filter can save 5 percent of the energy used. That could save 175 pounds of CO2 per year.

Buy energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs for your most-used lights. Although they cost more initially, they save money in the long run by using only 1/4 the energy of an ordinary incandescent bulb and lasting 8-12 times longer. They provide an equivalent amount of bright, attractive light. Only 10% of the energy consumed by a normal light bulb generates light. The rest just makes the bulb hot. If every American household replaced one of its standard light bulbs with an energy efficient compact fluorescent bulb, we would save the same amount of energy as a large nuclear power plant produces in one year. In a typical home, one compact fluorescent bulb can save 260 pounds of CO2 per year.
Wrap your water heater in an insulating jacket, which costs just $10 to $20. It can save 1100 lbs. of CO2 per year for an electric water heater, or 220 pounds for a gas heater.

Use less hot water by installing low-flow shower heads. They cost just $10 to $20 each, deliver an invigorating shower, and save 300 pounds of CO2 per year for electrically heated water, or 80 pounds for gas-heated water.

And on to the good deals :)
I am so excited about this one!!!  I woke up to have an email from Groupon telling me about this deal for the Body Shop!!  Anyone else addicted?  $20 for $40 worth of anything from the Body Shop!! Valid at any body shop in the US!!!!!  It can't be used online :( but anyone can buy it even if they aren't in Philly.

Just a few freebies this friday!

Everyone gearing up for the weekend?  Meeeee toooooooo!!!  Not that it's looking to be that fabulous of a time.. hubby has an emergency dentist appt in the morning for a toothache!  Yuck.  Glad it's not me!!  We don't have dental insurance through either of our companies :( Both are too small I guess.  Anyone have any good dental discount tips?  I purchased a discount dental plan through dentalplans.com...  I think that's it anyway!!  And then we can use that at certain dentist's that accept that plan, ours is Aetna, and we get a discount on procedures and such... not too shabby of a discount either!  Paired with a dentist that accepts the CareCredit credit card and we don't have to pay interest for 6 to 12 months depending on the amount.  So it makes it pretty affordable for that otherwise CRAZY EXPENSIVE dental work!  Have you looked at that stuff?  Yikes!  Anyway, just wanted to share that tip with anyone else who may be in the same boat...

I have some actual paper coupons that are too good to just toss, even though I really don't need them.  If anyone is interested, just comment me with your email address, and I'll contact you to send them in the mail.  I'll even foot the postage bill!  So this is sorta like my first giveaway!  And all you have to do is say you want it first!
Coupon #1) 20% off your entire purchase at Gymboree.. expires November 24

Coupon #2) 30% off purchase of regular priced item at Gymboree.. expires November 24

Both good deals but Eve is pretty much all set with clothes!

Coupon #3) 60 day trial membership to BJ's club, must sign up by December 31, then membership good for 60 days
Before we had a membership I used to LOVE to get this offer.. I would sign up just before Halloween to get candy there for a reasonable price and then I'd be set through the holidays when we generally use more food for parties and dinners and such anyway!

So again!  Just comment on this posting if you want any of these great coupons!

Because I have a LOT going on today I'm only posting a few freebies :)

This is an AWESOME opportunity to win one of 80 gift cards to GROUPON!  And we all know how awesome groupon is!

Laundry tips and Wacky Wednesday freebies!!

Hey there ladies.. and gentlemen!! I got a fabulous email this morning from Real Simple regarding how often we should do our laundry.  I didn't know that you could wear a sweater 5 or 6 times before it needed to be washed.. how about you?  I have always HATED laundry.. along with house cleaning of ANY kind, so I have usually gone with the.. did it get dirty or stinky approach for most of my clothes.. unless it's summer and I was super sweaty or something.. or if I know I've worn it more then a few times!  But how many mom's out there are now finding they can't wear anything for 5 minutes without the darling little one wiping some type of smutz all over it?!  I used to be able to pull off a pair of jeans for about 5 wears or more if I wasn't digging in the dirt ;) Now I'm lucky if I get two!   Oh well.. supposedly my laundry pile should dwindle now that it's cooler, but to me that means long sleeves, more material, heavier fabrics.. MORE LAUNDRY!!  YUCK!  LOL!  Check out Real Simple's laundry When to Wash it guide... it includes some tips for jackets and other winter wear :)

One tidbit I picked up from somewhere else awhile ago is the quantity of laundry detergents recommended by the manufacturer's are a bit more then really needed.  Today's washers are very efficient especially when compared with the ancient bash it against some rocks in the river method!  Supposedly you do not need to use nearly as much laundry detergent as we are trained to believe.. if any at all!  I'm not quite sold on the "no detergent needed" theory.. have they smelled my husbands work clothes?!  And I'm not convinced when it comes to cloth diapers either.  I tried to refind this article... and came up with this one.. We Don't Need no Stinking Detergent!! seems like the same one I read a few months back.  This is especially valuable info for people who have sensitive skin and buy the super expensive detergents.. try using just plain old water :)

aaaaand time for some freebies!

Thank God it's Freebie Friday!!!

Have you guys ever thought about reusable straws?  Well.. I saw them a while back, and they've been re-brought to my attention.  We use straws all the time... especially for our drinky drinks!!  With all the concerns over BPA in plastic containers etc. we replaced everything with BPA-free containers and bottles.  But what about the straw?  It's plastic.. and most of the time they just go in the trash... after they're done leaching all kinds of awesome plasticy (is that a word?!) chemicals into our drinks, that is.  Anyway.. my next mission is to find some inexpensive glass straws to replace our plastic straw addiction.  I'll keep ya'll posted!

Remember a Groupon I posted for a canvas on demand photo enlargement?  Well ours just arrived today!!!  I was soooo excited to see it.. and was amazed at how AWESOME it turned out!!  It's a fancy gallery wrapped canvas picture of Eve on our vacation in Long Island over Labor day weekend!  I placed the order on Oct. 8 and it only took 1 week.  It looks so amazingly crisp and clear.. for a 20x24 picture.. Domino was freaking out barking scared of the giant Eve that was there to get her back for all the cheerio's she's stolen!!  I can't wait to make Justin hang it up :)  These offers come along every now and again.. so I'll be sure to let you guys know when it happens again!

Have a fabulous weekend!!  And enjoy freebie friday too ;)

This one's for the ladies!!

You have to sign up for a year's worth of issues, but you don't pay anything if you cancel right after you get your freebie magazines.  This is something I have done before without any trouble.. other then the calling to cancel!  The free workout video makes this deal awesome!

Rainy Day Pick me ups!

Yuck!  Rain.  Again.  Though this is great for the green things outside.. for me.. there is nothing better to do then search out some freebies!  As for my going green ventures I am stuck on hold right now.  I have been waiting on a few orders of Unpaper Towels from Her Majesty's Closet on Facebook.  Check her out.. she's got lots of cute stuff!  Sadly there has been an issue with her fabric supplier.. so we wait.. but in the meantime I've just started using all my kitchen towels as paper towels.  I use them to clean up spills.. all the more frequent thanks to my darling daughter wanting to do everything by herself!  Been using them in recipes that call for things to drain on paper towels.. such as eggplant for my ziti.. YUM! And I have a few that I have designated as for use with cleaning products.. because yes.. I used to use paper towels for EVERYTHING! from cleaning the counters to the fridge and garbage can etc.

So... this is my green tip for the day.. go through your kitchen towels and see which ones you want to keep for simply hand and dish drying and then find the ones that can be turned into cleaning rags or replace paper towel use in some other way :)

And.. without further delay.. FREE STUFF FOR YOU!!

Totally Free Tuesday!

Hello fellow freebie finders!  Another fabulous day here in PA... Hope the weather is as lovely wherever you may be!  SO I know nothing about graphic design, but tried to do my best to come up with a blogo (like my terminology? hehehe) for this site here.  Using Microsoft Paint no less!  I need to get my photoshop skills tuned back up and see if I can't create something really nifty!  I'm a big fan of retro though, so I love the pic I found.. I think it's a good representation of what I am trying to do here.. share my thrifty "mama knows best" tips with anyone who cares about being lean mean and green like I do!  LOL!  Lean Mean and Green.. my new motto!  I like it!!

Mama cloth review!!
Ladies only section!! NO MEN ALLOWED!! :P
So ladies.. the long awaited review of mama cloth... yes.. it's exactly what it sounds like.. pads and panty liners made out of cloth!  I am super excited about these!!  Even if my mom made fun of me because she thought the world was advancing away from these home made products that her mother had to use!  For all those cloth diapering mom's out there.. why do you do it? To save money?  To save trees?  Or to keep trash out of the landfill?  Whatever your reasons, mama cloth will fulfill those same goals for your feminine needs as cloth diapers do for your diapering needs!

There are tons and tons of different types of mama cloth out there, made of different types of fabrics and in different sizes, shapes, etc.  So these are the ones I got.. Pieces of Sungreen why?  because they were the CHEAPEST I could find.. duh!!  And they were still made out of super cute fabrics :)

So.. what are the main differences between cloth and the plastic ones we buy at the store now?  Cost and Comfort!  These seem to be costly at first.. $40 for a set.. but I would imagine I spend at least that in a year on pads.. so considering these will last me much longer!  Comfort = 100,000% more comfortable then the plastic diaper like counterpart!  OMG!  It was amazing!  Felt like I was wearing nothing but my regular panties!  Also, for some reason, I didn't think of them as gross pieces of trash that I didn't want to touch afterwards.. partly because they cost me some $$ and probably because I change so many cloth diapers.. like all mama's.. I have a new definition of gross :)

If I had to have a complaint it would have to be the size of the "wings" on these pads.  I think if they were wider they wouldn't move around as much, which was really only an issue for the panty liners.  But other then that they were fantastic!  And then I found that there are a large number of different styles.. even for thongs.. and a lot of them have wider wings.  I'm sure I could request wider wings on my next order and I'm sure she would do her best to fulfill my wishes.

Pieces of Sungreen also makes sandwich wraps and snack baggies too!!  Guess I'll be a repeat customer for sure!  We spend a small fortune on plastic bags for lunches since both Justin and I are packers :)  Talk about ways to save money.. packing your lunch saves us right around $200-300/month if you assume about $10/day/person vs. $20/week at the grocery store!

So if anyone decides to try out the wonderful home made wares from Pieces of Sungreen be sure to let her know that Stephanie Skelonis sent you!  Maybe I'll score some freebies or be able to host a giveaway!
